A 17-year-old suspect is in custody following a targeted shooting at the Mall of Louisiana that claimed the life of an innocent bystander and injured five others. The incident, which erupted Thursday afternoon in the mall’s food court, was the result of a confrontation between two groups that local authorities say was fueled by long-standing disputes.
The victim was identified as Martha Odom, 17, a senior at Ascension Episcopal School in Lafayette. Odom was at the mall with classmates for an unofficial “senior skip day” when she was caught in the crossfire. On Friday, Markel Lee, 17, surrendered to Baton Rouge police and now faces charges of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted murder, and illegal use of a weapon.
Baton Rouge Police Chief TJ Morse confirmed that surveillance footage showed two groups arguing before guns were drawn. “This was a targeted confrontation, not a random act,” Morse said, adding that at least one other suspect is still being sought. Among the five survivors, one 43-year-old man remains in critical condition, while others are being treated for less severe injuries. Governor Jeff Landry has called for a “targeted warrant sweep” in the suspects’ neighborhoods, vowing that such violence will not be tolerated in public spaces.
