Diplomatic attention is centered on New York today as U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio prepares to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during the United Nations General Assembly.
Reuters reported that the meeting is scheduled for Wednesday morning, September 23, as both governments continue discussions tied to the war in Ukraine. The gathering brings senior U.S. and Russian officials together while separate diplomatic contacts involving Kyiv are also taking place.
President Donald Trump met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy at the United Nations on Tuesday. Their talks included the possibility of reducing attacks on energy infrastructure as the conflict continues to affect power and fuel facilities.
The diplomatic activity comes alongside continued fighting, including drone and missile attacks connected to both sides of the conflict.
Lavrov is also due to address the United Nations General Assembly later this week, where Russia’s position on the war and wider international issues is expected to remain part of the agenda.
