According to officials familiar with the matter, the United States has invited Japan to take part in a proposed international Board of Peace focused on Gaza, a framework tied to Washington’s broader plan for postwar governance in the territory.
The invitation was delivered in a letter from U.S. President Donald Trump to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. The board would be tasked with overseeing a provisional administration in Gaza, with the goal of stabilizing the region and supporting longer-term peace efforts after the ongoing conflict.
Japanese government representatives have acknowledged receiving the request and say Tokyo broadly supports initiatives aimed at restoring peace and humanitarian conditions in Gaza. At the same time, they have indicated that Japan will need time to carefully assess the proposal before deciding whether to formally join the board.
The United States has also reached out to other major powers, including China and Russia, signaling an effort to give the initiative wider international backing. For Japan, the decision will involve balancing its diplomatic principles, regional interests, and longstanding emphasis on multilateral cooperation.
