Jacket women complete Texas sweep

LAREDO, Texas – The Yellow Jackets close out the weekend with back-to-back victories after erasing a 14-point deficit to defeat Texas A&M International, 62-57, on Saturday night.

Lyndzi Rich and Morgan Ham led the Green and Gold, posting 19 points each, followed by Remi Wientjes with nine.  Ham also led in rebounds bringing down seven, with Rich behind her with six.

The Yellow Jackets (2-0) opened the game, with Morgan Ham going to the board for a lay up on the team’s first possession.  Texas A&M International (0-2) immediately answered back tying up the game, before taking a 7-3 lead to end the first quarter.

After trailing early in the first quarter, the Green and Gold opened the period with a 5-3 run to cut the Dustdevils’ lead.  Lyndzi Rich would score four points for the Yellow Jackets, after making back-to-back free throws. TAMIU broke off a 9-5 spurt, extending its lead to 27-18.  Abby Switzer responded with a layup, helping the Yellow Jackets bring the score within seven.  The Green and Gold shot for 7-12 (58.3 percent) to finish the half with a 30-22 score, in favor of the Dustdevils.

BHSU started off the third quarter with a 4-2 run, before TAMIU pushed ahead of the Green and Gold, 44-28.  Rich scored six in a row to put the Yellow Jackets down by five to head into the final period.

The Green and Gold tipped off the quarter outscoring the Dustdevils in the six minutes to trail by one.  Morgan Ham’sjumper gave the Yellow Jackets the first lead of the game.  Remi Wientjes followed with the first 3-pointer of the game to give Black Hills State a 54-50 lead.

BHSU shot 46.2 percent from the field (24-for-52), while TAMIU was 40.7 percent from the floor (22-for-54).  The Yellow Jackets went 4-for-12 beyond the arc and outrebounded the Dustdevils 29-27.  The Yellow Jackets forced 26 turnovers for TAMIU, while the Green and Gold totaled 23.

Black Hills State will next play in Marshall, Minn., for the Ramada Classic hosted by Southwest Minnesota State on Nov. 16 and 17.  The Green and Gold will take on William Jewell at 3 p.m. on Friday and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
