Ella Goodman and Rose Miller scored, as the Black Hills State University women’s soccer team drew with Colorado Mesa University, 2-2, on Sunday afternoon.

“I am super proud of this group. We definitely have a lot of warriors on our team, and they led us today,” said head coach Mike Greco. “It may not be a notch in the win column, but this is a huge and well-deserved victory for us.”

Both teams got off a shot in the first minute, foreshadowing the back-and-forth game that was in store. In the 28th minute, the Yellow Jackets (0-11, 0-6 RMAC) earned a corner kick. Rose Miller put the ball in the box on the set piece, and it eventually fell to Goodman. The Australian native was able to take advantage, scoring to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead. Just two minutes later, the Mavericks (4-5-1, 2-4 RMAC) responded, tying up the match, 1-1. Just before half, Allyson Swain scored to put CMU up, 2-1.

After a scoreless 35 minutes to open the second half, BHSU tied things up in the 83rd minute when Rose Miller tallied her first goal of the year. Both teams had a shot on goal in the final minute, but the game moved to extra time.

In overtime, CMU outshot BHSU, 14-0, but the Yellow Jacket defense stayed firm, keeping the Mavericks off the board, and securing the draw.

The game was the first overtime game for the Green and Gold since they defeated CCU, 3-2, in double overtime in 2017 (Oct. 22). It was only the second overtime match for BHSU in the three-year history of the program, and first ever tie for the team.

The Mavericks outshot the Yellow Jackets, 47-13. Miller and Goodman’s goals led the squad, while Miller, Morgan Smith, and Katie Nielson each had three shots in the game. Teagen Hartley (0-1-1) allowed two goals while making 12 saves in 90 minutes.

Ashton Hall and Allyson Swain scored for CMU. Jessica Jolley (0-0-1) allowed two goals, making four saves in net.

The Green and Gold will next come home to host a pair of RMAC games. BHSU welcomes CSU-Pueblo on October 5, before playing New Mexico Highlands on October 7. Friday’s match is set to kickoff at 4 p.m., while Sunday’s game begins at 1 p.m.
